my world : 2016’S MATTHEW MOYER – Monthly Diary

MATTHEW MOYER is a 6’8″ Forward/ Potential Wing from Gahanna, OH ( Lincoln H.S. ) . The recent SYRACUSE University pledge had been considered one of the biggest Risers in the 2016 class in terms of stock, profile. He certainly fits the profile of a Syracuse Wing recruit with his size, 7’2″ Wingspan, Athleticism and burgeoning Versatility.

Matthew is a very humble,  high character, well rounded, well spoken young man. He wants to be a non-invasive cardiologist, is a first-chair concert violinist, takes advanced placement classes and studies the Bible after his basketball workouts each day. Moyer works out with noted trainer Anthony Rhodman, waking up at 5 a.m., studying religion and sharing gym space with Wisconsin’s Traevon Jackson and NBA players Trey Burke and Jared Sullinger.  I am confident that Syracuse ( and some hardcore ACC fans ) will enjoy becoming more familiar with him through these Monthly entries.

“I’m self-driven,” – “I want to be the best at everything that I do.”

My AAU summer experience was awesome.  I was able to play against some of the best players in the country especially in the Reebok Breakout Camp and Elevate Hoops Tournament.  I was also able to play in front of some of the best colleges in the country.  My AAU team is unconventional.  It is a Christian team.  A lot of people said I would not get a scholarship playing with the VCC Ohio Warriors.  It was great watching the blessings unfold.  I ended up receiving 25 D1 offers and serious interest from an additional 15 before committing to SYRACUSE.  The recruiting process was overwhelming.  I was really excited when I did an unofficial visit to Syracuse and it had everything I was looking for.  I love my recruiter Gerry McNamara.  Coach Boeheim is a hall of fame coach (need I say more).  I really connected to the rest of the staff including Coach Hopkins.  I fit into their system perfectly – I am a long wing.  I like that the campus is not too big and not too small and the facilities are beautiful.  Lastly, my family and I know I will be receiving a top notch education.  In addition, I really enjoyed meeting and talking to a lot of the 2015 commits, former players Kaleb Joseph and Michael Carter Williams.

I want to take basketball as far as I can however, I know at some point in time the ball stops bouncing for all of us.  At the end of that journey I want to become a non-invasive cardiologist.  Syracuse and it’s alumni will definitely put me on the right path for that to become a reality!

It feels good to be able to just focus on my academics and continuing to develop on the court.  I workout Monday thru Friday at 5:00 a.m. with my trainer Anthony Rhodman and I put up 500 shots a day after school and do weightlifting three days a week after school as well.  I have a big class load this year which includes AP Calculus and Physics.  I am a concert violinist and I have recently taken up fishing.  It is very calming!

I’m really excited to go to Syracuse Midnight Madness!
