      Wassup guys! My name is Aquira DeCosta as some of you may have already known. This is my first time doing a monthly diary so I hope this is a good start! I was born on January 31st, 2000 and I am currently living in Stockton, California. I was born in Sacramento, California but moved to Stockton a while back because my family and I wanted to live closer to my high school, St. Mary’s. As you guys may have already known, my high school girls basketball team has won state during my Freshman year and the feeling is still unbelievable that we have accomplished such a goal with such a young team! I am really blessed to be with a team like them and hopefully we can repeat again this upcoming season! After my Freshman high school season was over, I’ve had the opportunity to be able to try out for the U16 USA Women’s Basketball team! Trials was really intense and was probably the hardest moment of my life because of how there were just the best of the best there and we were all there to make the team. So after the trials, I was one of the 12 players that made the team! It was truly a great opportunity to play for my country! Unfortunately, we lost to Brazil in the semifinals and won a Bronze medal (3rd place). But either way, I was glad to be able to play with such an amazing group of girls.

      Not only did I have a great freshman high school season and was able to play for my country, but I’ve have an outstanding rest of the summer with my summer team too! I was playing with the Cal Stars, a Nike EYBL team that was mixed with some of the best players I’ve had the chance of playing with! I was the youngest player on the team so I was used to being called the baby on the team because I was the only freshman during the summer. It was really cool to play against a lot of the best competition out in girls high school basketball and it really made me realize how much potential I have if I just keep working hard and becoming the best I can be. And did I tell you that I have won Nike Nationals during the summer! It really just felt like another unreal moment! Also I have gained a lot of exposure from a variety of colleges including UConn, USC, UCLA, Cal, Louisville, and the list goes on! I cannot wait until next summer to play with a awesome coach and staff and a new team to play with!
       As of right now, I am just working on my ball handling skills and my mid range/long range shooting and getting ready for this upcoming high school season! I feel like I am developing more into a leader for my team this year and becoming more active on both sides of the court.  Off the court I am very outgoing and I am doing very well in the classroom since everyone knows that is a priority! So make sure to be on the lookout for us and come watch some of our games during this season! The people I would like to thank for such a great freshman year are my parents of course, because they were with me every step of the way and helping me remain humble. I would also like to thank Coach Kelly Sopak (Cal Stars AAU) for allowing me to play with the top team and being such a great coach towards me and helping me mature my game. Also I would love to thank my trainers Coach Lineni Noa, Coach Wayne, and Coach Ruthie Bolton for taking me to the next level with my skills and helping me develop into the player I am today and for taking their time in developing me and for always making me feel welcome with you guys and the Aim High family. Last but not least, I would like to thank God for all the accomplishments I have done over time and for giving me such a gift and talent that I have.
     So, after all I have said in this monthly diary, I will keep you updated with what is going on in my life next month hopefully!

{ our sources other than Coach Sopak, including several college coaches, told us it was DeCosta many wanted to see. The 6-foot-2 Class of 2018 star didn’t disappoint after finishing with a game-high 21 points and seven rebounds. DeCosta even dropped in two 3-pointers.

“The whole UConn staff was at the game and I know they were looking closely at Aquira,” said Sopak who added. “I’m looking forward to a call from Geno (Connecticut head coach Geno Auriemma) or someone on the UConn staff.”

Before the Stars could even get on the plane home Sopak’s cell phone was busy with inquiries about DeCosta from South Carolina, North Carolina, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Louisville, Cal and Oregon. }
